Unlike most dangerous substances, alcohol is not illegal. Beer is something universally accepted as a meal-time or party beverage of choice and other alcohol substances, such as wine and hard liquor, are also widely found in group activities. When a person chooses to drink alone frequently, however, to the point where they cannot remember most of their night, they have a problem. Alcoholism, while legal when done at home, is as dangerous as drug abuse and should be treated as quickly as possible if detected.
There is nothing wrong with having a couple drinks at the bar once a week or with a meal. People do that everyday and will continue to do so for the next hundred years. If you have a friend who likes to drink on his or her own, however, there might be enough of a problem for intervention. Alcohol is a beverage which mellows the mind and makes a person pass out. Drinking heavy amounts on an everyday basis is not a good thing to do.
Oftentimes when a person feels sad or lonely, he or she turns to alcohol to make them feel better. The problem with this is that too much consummation of alcohol can destroy a persons life. Drinking lots of beer and liquor may implore a person to make bad decisions such as drinking and driving or worse. If you know anyone who does these sort of things, don’t laugh and act like there is no problem. An alcohol intervention is what good friends would do. Recognize that this person you love has a problem and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
Like any addiction intervention, you need to be as strong as the person you are attacking. You can’t give up at any point and you should bring along as many friends as possible to bolster your point. Calling a facility and having the person committed right away is the best way to do this. Don’t let them talk themselves out of getting help. If they hate you for helping them in the short term, let them hate you. It’s a small price to pay for saving someone’s life.
Overall alcohol addiction can be a very scary thing. It’s like a never-ending hole that a person, and his or her loved ones, are falling through. But it is not a problem without a solution. Get your friend into a facility that can help them and don’t regret not helping them later.
